September 09 Disney Vacation Club Update With Shontell Crawford

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Back in January we did our first interview with Disney Vacation Club (DVC) expert and DVC resale broker Shontell Crawford.  That interview proved to be popular with our readers so we are going to make this a regular feature - checking in from time to time with Shontell on the latest about DVC.  Shontell is also a sponsor of our dvctalk discussion forum - a list Tim started back in 1998 that now has over 4,000 subscribers.

FamilyTravelGurus: Since we  last talked, Disney’s Bay Lake Towers have opened.  What has  been the response to the newest DVC resort?  Is it too soon  for resales to be available at Bay Lake Towers?

The response to the new Bay Lake Towers has been overwhelmingly positive.  Members have been begging Disney for a resort on the monorail since day one and it has finally come true!  The views on both sides of the property are spectacular, the rooms are modern, full of sunshine, sleek and yet comfortable.  It reminds me of retro Miami with the Magic and comfort of Disney. To “top” it all off…the Top of the World lounge brings the MK fireworks to our backyard along with the audio as icing on the cake.

Surprisingly, it isn’t too soon for resales to be available.  Unforeseen circumstances are just a part of life and we have already had a handful of BLT listings come in…and as you might imagine…sell VERY quickly.

FamilyTravelGurus: You recently stayed at Bay Lake Towers and the new Treehouse Villas - tell us about that experience.

I really enjoyed both!  The Treehouses are so unique – three bedrooms, two baths with bunk beds in the third bedroom. Lots of treated wood complimented with granite and black modern appliances.  The master bathroom has a unique setup with the jacuzzi and shower next to each other. The pool is nice and you are within walking distance to the main SSR Pool & Spa center.  The feeling the unit provides amidst the trees is so unusual and fun.  I heard someone calling it “Glamping”…glamorous camping. Unless you have an aversion to nature, I think most families will really enjoy these.

Bay Lake Towers are just fantastic.  Truly.  I don’t know what else to say…everyone I have either been with or talked to about the property has nothing but good things to say. A few questions from listeners on a recent videocast asked questions about the parking lot view from the MK side possibly being a negative but honestly, I don’t think that should be an issue when you can see the castle above the tree line. That is the only thing that hasn’t received amazing reviews from BLT to my knowledge.  It is certainly now my overall favorite property – not necessarily for the location but for the décor.  It’s just my style!

FamilyTravelGurus:  How is availability of resales at the other DVC resorts?

Resales are consistent and while the Beach Club still remains somewhat elusive, everything becomes available year round.  If someone wants something specific we always do our best to find it for them as quickly as possible.

FamilyTravelGurus: Are you  seeing more resales available with the downturn in the economy?

Yes, I think we’ve had more sellers in the past 12-16 months than in years past which is almost certainly related to the economy.  But our market ebbs and flows fairly consistently. November and December inventory increases due to the holidays taking priority and then in January it turns around and usually levels off around May.

FamilyTravelGurus: Are resale prices holding steady?

We saw a drop in the right of first refusal buyback figures from DVC earlier this year and resale prices fell for certain properties, while others held steady.  Personally, I feel like Saratoga has become the best deal financially at the moment because the ROFR has dropped to around $70 per point – which is similar to Old Key West yet SSR has 12 more years on the deed. Not to mention the annual dues are the lowest outside BLT.

FamilyTravelGurus: What do you think about the future California DVC property?

This is the one I’m VERY excited about, having never personally gone to Disneyland.  I’m intrigued to see how the demand will be.  Having only a minimal amount of units available and a LOT of Disney lovers on the West Coast.  I’m wondering if this is a test run for DVC to expand further in the CA area.

FamilyTravelGurus: Tell us about your new RR&R online Video segments featured on your  blog.

Thanks so much for asking, Tim!  In the almost 20 years I’ve been in Orlando as both a Cast Member and in the DVC resales, I have consistently been asked about “my” favorites out at Disney. The team decided it would be a good idea if I shared those and so we came up with RR&R = Restaurants, Recess and Relaxation specifically related to the Disney resorts.  What started out as a written blog has become a video blog so people can actually see the locations.  I’ve been inviting other Disney experts to join me and share their favorites as well.  Hopefully, it’s giving people at home something new to consider for their next Disney vacation….and at the very least, a Disney fix anytime!

FamilyTravelGurus: And you are on twitter and Facebook now, too?

Yes, we sure are…we have a fan page on Facebook and we now Twitter - for anybody who wants to see pictures and updates from Disney amidst our travels and we also have a DVC “deals” twitter for anybody in the DVC resale market who wants to know about the great listings when they come along.  We have been having fun with all of them and it has helped us really get to know some of the people we have been working with and talking to for years…many from dvctalk, I might add!

FamilyTravelGurus: Any other DVC rumors or news on the horizon?

There always seem to be rumors, doesn’t there?!

We know Disney recently purchased some property in the Virginia/D.C. Area, rumors have been talking Las Vegas for a number of years and according to a survey, Lake Tahoe and Los Cabos may even be future considerations.  With our DVC President being named Chairman of ARDA (American Resort Development Association) I would imagine many doors could be opening that we have yet to consider.

Thank you so much for asking for my feedback, Tim!  I must say that it has always been a pleasure talking DVC with you and all the members of dvctalk.  I can’t believe we have been chatting over 10 years now, haven’t we?!  This is a great little cul de sac in the massive world of internet Disney information and I’m really happy to call it one of my homes.  You have done a fabulous job of moderating and developing this community.  You deserve a “cyber” mayor award of some kind!!!

FamilyTravelGurus: and thank you Shontell!  It’s amazing how much dvctalk has grown and we always appreciate you being a part of the list (readers - find out more about dvctalk at:  http://www.familytravelgurus.com/dvclist.html )

Oberammergau Passion Play in Germany

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

by Tim Larison

Oberammergau One interesting part of being a travel agent is that you learn about places and events you were not aware of previously.  I recently had this experience when I interviewed Shannon Stitt of Collette Vacations for our website.  Shannon told me about the Oberammergau Passion Play.  “(This event) is truly once in a lifetime event,” said Shannon.  “The play performance dates back to 1634.  During the Thirty year War, the village of Oberammergau was spared the black plaque and for this reason, the villagers vowed that every ten years they would give a play to honor the live of Christ.  The Performers are native Oberammergauers.”

In reading more about the play I learned that the performance is SEVEN hours with a meal at the intermission.  Collette Vacations offers a variety of packages to see the play, as well as other tours around the World. Read our complete interview with Shannon here

Princess A Great Choice for Alaska

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

We recently chatted with Carolyn Szekeres from Princess Cruises about Alaska and what Princess offers in general.

“At Princess, we consider ourselves to be the Alaska leaders.  We have invested so much in our Alaska product that we think we really offer the very best Alaska experience.  We have been named Best Cruise Line in Alaska 4 of the past 5 years by
Travel Weekly,” says Carolyn.

We especially like the Princess “cruisetours” -where you combine a cruise with several days exploring the interior of Alaska. Carolyn agrees: “A cruisetour is the only way to see all the best of Alaska. Glaciers with Glacier Bay are included on every cruisetour, Mountains with at least 2 nights at one or both Princess lodges in the Denali area, and Wildlife. We offer our exclusive Direct to the Wilderness rail program that takes our passengers on the domed rail car directly from the ship to Denali on the same day.”

Read our complete interview with Carolyn here.  Alaska is one of our favorite cruise destinations and Princess offers a variety of itineraries to see this Great Land.

Interview with Kathleen Kavanagh on River Cruising

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

by Tim Larison

artistry Last summer I took an Avalon River Cruise on the Danube through parts of Hungary, Austria and Germany.  It was a fantastic trip!  Tim was fortunate to have sailed with a river cruise “expert” on that voyage – Kathleen Kavanagh from Globus.  We recently talked with Kathleen about river cruising and what’s new with Avalon Waterways.

FamilyTravelGurus: Many of our readers have cruised on the big ocean ships - what about a River Cruise is different and would appeal to people who like cruising?

Kathleen: “River Cruising is a much more intimate cruising experience. Think of it as similar to a huge hotel versus a boutique hotel. Our largest ship holds only 180 passengers and our newer ships only hold 132. River Cruising takes you into the villages, towns and major cities on the rivers versus commercial shipping ports. In many instances, you walk to the city center and truly can experience the area. River Cruising appeals to the more experienced traveler who looks to combine the unpack once concept but experience the different destinations. River Cruise ships are dry docked every year for two months for cleaning and updating versus the dry docking of larger vessels is every 2-3 years for upkeep so our vessels maintain their ‘newness’ for much longer than ocean vessels.”

FamilyTravelGurus: What has been your favorite River Cruise and why?

Kathleen: “My personal favorite is Rhine and The Moselle because I like wine and the smaller towns. The Moselle has over 150 vineyards and the villages are like pictures from fairy tales. The castles on the Rhine are a must but the trade off is the Danube because everyone equates the Danube with Vienna and music so it depends on the type of person you are. I would personally love to take our North Sea to the Black Sea which is a 21 night cruise that goes all the way from Amsterdam to the Black Sea. That way, I would sail every major river in Europe on one vacation.”

Hire A Pet Sitter While On Vacation

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

pet

Having pets can sometimes put a crimp into family vacation plans.  Anne Manske of As You Wish Pet Sitters has a solution - hire a professional pet sitter!  We recently discussed with Anne the services she provides and the benefits of hiring a pet sitter in general.

FamilyTravelGurus: What are some of the advantages of having a sitter watch your pets while you are on vacation?

A professional pet sitter, like As You Wish Pet Sitters, will come to your home to care for your pet while you are away.  This keeps your pet in a familiar environment, as well as, providing exercise and lots of personal attention.  Furthermore, this eliminates the trauma of being transported and minimizes exposure to illnesses of other animals.  I am bonded, insured and pet first aid certified.  I schedule meet and greets where I come to your house to familiarize myself with your pet, his habits and routine.  I send daily updates to my pet owners via e-mail or phone letting them know exactly how their pet is doing while they’re away.  What I get complimented on often is situations where I offer flexibility and have had clients call me to schedule an additional visit when their plane has been delayed or they were stuck in traffic.  Getting to know your pet’s personally is a priority so that I can detect early if there is a change which can prevent problems from occurring.  Your pet, their health and safety, is my number one priority.  Extra services offered, such as crime-deterrent measures, watering plants, bringing in the mail, etc.

FamilyTravelGurus: Why is it better to have a professional pet sitter like yourself compared to a relative or a friend?

The difference with a professional pet sitter is that this is what I do for a living.  I show up when I say I will plus have the training to deal with the unexpected pet health emergencies.  I have gotten clients after they hired the neighborhood teenager who then either forgot to let the dog out or had a party at the house.  The chances that your neighbor is going to know the signs of when an animal is stressing or the bag of tricks to deal with this problem is not always a given.  For example, recently I had a dog that every time I visited he had chewed on a new item and it wasn’t his bone.  I called an animal behaviorist and had a solution that not only kept the dog happy but had the owners able to return to a still intact home.

FamilyTravelGurus: When you go on vacation, do you have a sitter watch your pets?  How does that work for you?

I used to kennel my dog but he would always return home stressed, tired and many times sick.  Now I use a pet sitter so that my dog Max can be in the comfort of his own home and stay on his normal routine.  This works very well since I am able to enjoy my vacation knowing Max is being well loved and taken care of.  I now return home to a dog in the same state and the same environment that I left him.

FamilyTravelGurus: You are based in Colorado - what areas do you cover with your pet sitting services?

I cover Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree but have associates within our company that will go from Greenwood Village down to Castle Rock.

FamilyTravelGurus: We have many readers who live outside of Colorado or in other parts of the state - is there a national organization that people can contact for pet sitting assistance in their area?

NAPPS, The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters is a great resource.  Their website is www.petsitters.org

FamilyTravelGurus: What is the best way for people to get in touch with you?

They can call me at 303-313-9474 ext. 2 or e-mail at anne@asyouwishpetsitters.com

FamilyTravelGurus: Thanks Anne.  This is a great service you provide!

New Zealand - It’s Just Different!

Monday, May 11th, 2009

One destination we consistently get good reports on from our clients is New Zealand.  “After one month I was surprised that I could have stayed another week or two. The New Zealand countryside is just gorgeous,” wrote one client after a trip we helped arrange.  “We loved New Zealand. Very progressive country and friendly people,” wrote another.

We recently talked with Margot Nahay of Down Under Answers about what makes New Zealand such a popular vacation destination.  “The biggest highlight and a must see for any traveler to New Zealand is Queenstown,” said Margot. “This is the home to adventure activities such as the Shotover Jet – a 20 minute high speed jetboat ride down the Shotover River, suitable for any age or fitness level.”

New Zealand is definitely on our “must see” list for a future trip, especially after we talked to Marot.  Read our full interview here.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas

We are so looking forward to the debut of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas later this year!  The Oasis will be the largest passenger ship afloat and will have many unique features - such as the Aqua Outdoor Theatre pictured to the left.

“What is unique about (our new ships) is that they will be destinations unto themselves with seven different “neighborhoods”.  This neighborhood concept gives the passengers many areas to explore, relax, drink and have fun”, says Michelle Van Deusen from Royal Caribbean.  A sister ship to the Oasis, the Allure of the Seas, will sail in 2010.

Take Me To Tuscany!

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

In our travels we often meet with private tour guides that we later recommend to our clients. Scot gave our family a terrific tour of the Vatican when we were in Rome in 2006. Scot and his wife Rina now offer personalized custom tours in Italy, specializing in the Tuscany area.

“Tuscany’s popularity grows every year, and we can’t complain about that!” Scot says.  “It’s an easy place to keep coming back to for so many reasons, from the breathtaking countryside drives to the great food to the fact that it’s well connected with Florence and Rome by train and road. We have plenty of thematic tours for tourists with an interest in a particular face of Italy: wine tours (guided visits to exclusive wineries, lunches in historic castles etc), tours that focus on the Etruscan culture, or ceramics, or Renaissance gardens and villas. And, of course we have tours to all the great art cities of Tuscany and Umbria: Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca, Pisa, Assisi, Perugia….”

Can you find us good places to eat?  “We do a lot of research to find exceptional food that doesn’t appear in the guidebooks,” Scot says, “little restaurants and trattorie which are a great value because you’re eating incredibly fresh and well-prepared food, in a beautiful setting, that you wouldn’t have found about otherwise.”

Sounds wonderful!  Read more of our interview with Scot and Rina here
