Disney Vacation Club Room Sizes

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The table below lists the room sizes (in square feet) of different Disney Vacation Club (DVC) resorts.  We’ve stayed at the Boardwalk Villas, Beach Club Villas, Old Key West, Wilderness Lodge Villas, and Vero Beach.  Our favorite has always been the one bedroom units at Old Key West - we loved the extra room the Old Key West one bedrooms gave our family of four.

Resort Studio 1 Bedroom 2 Bedroom 3 Bedroom
Boardwalk 359 712 1071 2142
Beach Club 365 726 1083 n/a
OldKeyWest 376 942 1333 2202
Wild Lodge 356 727 1080 n/a

Vero Beach 275 880 1255 2125

While Old Key West is our favorite, we’ve enjoyed all of our stays at the different DVC properties.

Take Me To Tuscany!

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

In our travels we often meet with private tour guides that we later recommend to our clients. Scot gave our family a terrific tour of the Vatican when we were in Rome in 2006. Scot and his wife Rina now offer personalized custom tours in Italy, specializing in the Tuscany area.

“Tuscany’s popularity grows every year, and we can’t complain about that!” Scot says.  “It’s an easy place to keep coming back to for so many reasons, from the breathtaking countryside drives to the great food to the fact that it’s well connected with Florence and Rome by train and road. We have plenty of thematic tours for tourists with an interest in a particular face of Italy: wine tours (guided visits to exclusive wineries, lunches in historic castles etc), tours that focus on the Etruscan culture, or ceramics, or Renaissance gardens and villas. And, of course we have tours to all the great art cities of Tuscany and Umbria: Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca, Pisa, Assisi, Perugia….”

Can you find us good places to eat?  “We do a lot of research to find exceptional food that doesn’t appear in the guidebooks,” Scot says, “little restaurants and trattorie which are a great value because you’re eating incredibly fresh and well-prepared food, in a beautiful setting, that you wouldn’t have found about otherwise.”

Sounds wonderful!  Read more of our interview with Scot and Rina here

There’s an exciting new cruise ship coming to Port Canaveral, Florida!  Later this year will be the home port for the 130,000 ton Carnival Dream.  She will be sailing 7 night Caribbean sailings with lots of features - an expanded spa, family staterooms that can hold 5 people, and much more.

Pictured is an elaborate water slide on the Dream.

“Carnival is all about family cruising!  We have the most comprehensive family program at sea,” says Carnival’s Alicia Steuart.  Read more about the Dream and what’s new with Carnival in our interview with Alicia here.

Walt Disney owned a bowling alley? Celebrity Sports Center in Denver

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

 by Tim Larison

celebrityDid you know Walt Disney once owned a bowling alley, and that it was used to train workers for Disney World?  One of the fun places to visit in my youth was Celebrity Sports Center in Denver.  Celebrity was the first major Disney construction project after the completion of Disneyland.  Celebrity opened in 1960 and was owned by Disney until the late 70’s.  It featured 88 bowling lanes and an Olympic sized indoor swimming pool.

Celebrity used to have a great “passport to summer fun” program in the summer that I took advantage of with my friends many times.  For one price (as I remember around $6) you could have a day of unlimited bowling, unlimited swimming, and play in Celebrity’s “state of the art” video arcade.  What good times we had!  I remember bowling 15 games one day at Celebrity!

We were sad to see Celebrity torn down in the mid-90’s, replaced by a large hardware store.  But the memories live on.  Recently an excellent history of Celebrity was published on the web - read it here.  And another Celebrity tribute site is here.  For kids growing up in the Denver area in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s Celebrity Sports Center will always be fondly remembered.
